Fitzgerald to ask Minister for Update on Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada Site

Local Fine Gael Senator Frances Fitzgerald has stated that she will call on the Minister for Education, in the Senate, to ensure that work begins on the new Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada site as soon as possible.

“Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada has been waiting on a new site for three years. I am delighted that at last the old VEC site, adjacent to their current building, has been purchased by the Department but it’s no use as just a site. What the children, parents and teachers need is for building to begin on this site so that a new premises can open its doors and cater for the growing demand of the school,” said Frances Fitzgerald.

“Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada opened five years ago and in that time its numbers have jumped from 26 children to 237. Enrolment policies are showing that figure to be more like 300 in September, making Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada one of the fastest growing Gaelscoileanna in the country. That’s a testament to the parents and to the principal who are still operating out of prefab buildings,” continued Frances Fitzgerald.

“It is very disappointing to see that despite having purchased the site the Department have not listed Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada for any work this year. I will be asking the Minister into the Senate this week to explain why. This matter has been raised again and again by the staff and parents and local representatives and the campaigning will not stop until building has commenced on the site. Parents, children and staff deserve to know what plans the Department have for this thriving and vibrant school,” concluded Senator Frances Fitzgerald.
