Government must intervene to assist Lucan and Clondalkin VHI holders - Fitzgerald

Latest VHI premium hikes places further financial pressure of hard-working Lucan and Clondalkin families

Local Fine Gael Senator and Health Spokesperson, Frances Fitzgerald has said that the Government "must take action to assist hard-working families in Lucan and Clondalkin who have seen their VHI premium sky-rocket with the recent price increase announcement."

Responding to the news that VHI premiums are set to rise sharply, Senator Fitzgerald said, "If ever there was any doubt that the health system needs to be reformed, this latest VHI price increase highlights exactly why reform is required. I have been talking to many families in Lucan and Clondalkin who are extremely concerned about this latest increase in their VHI. Health insurance premiums are now like a second mortgage for some families and are placing additional and unfair financial pressures on families already trying to cope with a prolonged economic recession."

"For more than 13 years, Fianna Fail in Government has ignored the compelling need to reform our health service and residents in the area and right throughout the country are now paying the price through expensive insurance premiums," continued Senator Fitzgerald.

"It is times for real reform of our health service and I relish this challenge if elected to the next Dail," concluded Senator Fitzgerald.
