New playgrounds “welcome news for local children and families,” says Minister Fitzgerald

Local TD Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, has welcomed confirmation that South Dublin Council plans to build new playgrounds in Knockmitten and Rathcoole in 2014.

“Community playgrounds are vital assets for families, providing a suitable, safe focal point for children to improve many developmental skills," she said.

“In the South Dublin area, there are currently only 16 playgrounds, which is a low level per capita in comparison to other counties. These new builds are therefore most timely. I also welcome the fact that 2 additional playgrounds per year will be constructed over the coming 5 year period, funded from the Council’s 500,000 Playgrounds Programme Budget.

“I have been calling for more playground facilities in the area for many years, as has my Fine Gael colleague Cllr Emer Higgins. As Minister for Children I back all initiatives at local and government level that serve to give our youngest citizens the best possible quality of life.

“I commend the Council for recognising the importance of playgrounds for children and families, and I look forward to working with local communities to ensure that these facilities have the maximum positive impact in Knockmitten and Rathcoole”.
