Minister Fitzgerald to cheer on Girls in Green in Paris

Local TD Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Justice & Equality, will today (August 13th) travel to Paris to cheer on the Irish ladies rugby heroes – including captain and local teacher Fiona Coghlan - in their world cup semi-final against England.

She said: “Like so many Irish sports fans, I have been following closely the ladies’ amazing progress at this World Cup. Every member of the squad has been a brilliant ambassador for this country, displaying great individual talent and unbelievable team spirit under the inspiring captaincy of Fiona Coghlan, who teaches locally in Lucan Community College!

“Following hot on the heels of the historic success of the Republic of Ireland Women's Under 19 team at the recent 2014 UEFA Championship tournament, this team’s achievement is a testament to the ever-increasing popularity and strength of female team sports in this country.

“These ladies are role models to us all. The physical and mental health benefits of participation in exercise and sport are well known. This Government has made it a priority to increase the number of sports facilities available to young women, notably through the Sports Capital Programme which made this a key target.

“I congratulate Fiona and her team-mates as well as their hardworking coaches and backroom staff on this amazing achievement, and wish them every success in their semifinal, which I am so proud to witness in Paris this evening”.
