Once described as 'The Valley of the Squinting Windows' because of its inward, punitive and controlling attitudes, Ireland, in the last decade, became one of the most open, liberal and creative cultures in the world. Frances Fitzgerald was instrumental in that change - starting as a social worker, then an activist, and finally Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) she has been a powerful force for change.
