EU takes a monumental step forward in ratifying Istanbul Convention - Fitzgerald
“With today’s news from the General Affairs Council of the Member States finally requesting the consent of the European Parliament to ratify the Istanbul Convention, we have taken a huge leap forward in combatting violence against women across our continent,” said Frances Fitzgerald, MEP for Dublin and EPP Group coordinator on the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee today.
“This move forward has been long awaited by the Parliament and I congratulate the Swedish Presidency on finding agreement on this important dossier. As rapporteur for the Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence for the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee, I look forward to further advancing our work on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention for the entire European Union in light of today’s developments,” concluded MEP Fitzgerald.
