Impact of COVID-19 on Breast Cancer Patients - Fitzgerald & Transforming Breast Cancer Together

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

As both the EU and Member State governments work to tackle and mitigate the dire consequences of this pandemic, patients with existing and emerging conditions must not be forgotten. Despite the unusual and extraordinarily busy times our medical professionals find themselves in, it is critical that governments and the medical community work together to ensure continuity of care for outstanding conditions, particularly those where timing is critical, such as cancer, heart attacks, and stroke.

When it comes to breast cancer, should women find a lump or have concerns, they must not delay in seeking medical attention.

It is for this reason that the Transforming Breast Cancer Together initiative is today highlighting the impact of COVID-19 on breast cancer patients, and emphasising that we must ensure that steps are taken to protect at-risk patient groups. In these difficult times, we must nevertheless guarantee that those affected by breast cancer can access safe and quality procedures throughout the whole care pathway, from early diagnosis to treatment.

The Transforming Breast Cancer Together initiative, of which I am Chair, has today published a statement (please see below)  highlighting some of the most pressing challenges that the COVID-19 outbreak has brought upon breast cancer patients.
