Updated: Mar 9, 2022

Thursday 27th May, 12:00-13:15 IST

I am delighted to invite you to my next online event exploring how Ireland and Europe can best reap the benefits of Blockchain. This online event will take place on Thursday 27 May from 12:00-13:15 Irish time (13:00-14:15 CET) in conjunction with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland.

I will chair the discussion, and will be joined by the following distinguished panel of speakers:

  • Minister Paschal Donohoe TD - Minister for Finance and President of the Eurogroup

  • Pēteris Zilgalvis - European Commission, Head of Unit for Digital Innovation and Blockchain in DG CONNECT and Co-Chair of the European Commission FinTech Task Force

  • Elaine Coughlan - Co-founder, Atlantic Bridge

  • Sakhib Waseem - Chief Innovation Officer, The Proof of Trust

  • David Wachsman - Founder of Wachsman Consultancy

  • Mai Santamaria - Dept. of Finance and BlockW

The past few years has seen a huge surge of interest in blockchain technologies globally and here in Ireland. Blockchain technology presents a range of opportunities to provide solutions to problems across many sectors, including finance, supply-chain/logistics, healthcare and the not-for-profit / charity sector.

The EU believes that blockchain technology when properly used can provide significant benefits to European industry, the European economy, and to European society as a whole. For this reason, the European Commission is supporting blockchain on the policy, legal and regulatory, and funding fronts.

This seminar is a chance to discuss how Ireland and Europe can harness the benefits of blockchain. It can address the following questions:

• How can we get legal certainty for blockchain at an Irish and EU level?

• What areas are the key areas where blockchain should be focused?

• How can blockchain technologies overcome difficulties in operating with GDPR provisions?

• How can we develop education and understanding of blockchain technology in the general population?

• How can we ensure that blockchain provides a societal good and is not developed as a profit maximisation tool?

Participants can comment and ask questions via a LIVE chat. We kindly ask you to confirm your participation by registering for this webinar via the link above.

Regards,

Frances Fitzgerald MEP
